Monograph of Garcia-Llort
We present a new exhibition of Josep Maria Garcia-Llort in our gallery, we have selected a series of drawings and paintings made in recent years in which the artist continues to move through his particular aesthetic and thematic universe.
On this occasion, the exhibition has special relevance as the monograph that the renowned critic and historian Jordi Benet has dedicated to the painter will also be presented. Entitled ‘Josep Maria Garcia-Llort i la complicitat de la memoria’ (Josep Maria Garcia-Llort and the Complicity of Memory), the book offers a detailed account of the artist's life, from his childhood in Barcelona, where he studied in religious schools that would mark his work, to his convalescence from tuberculosis in a sanatorium that would confirm his vocation as a painter, up to the present day.
This monograph of Garcia-Llort is the perfect opportunity to get to know the artist in depth, especially his years in Paris, Louisiana and New York, before returning to Barcelona. These places, in spite of his personal approach to painting outside of fashions, did not cease to influence him on a thematic and chromatic level, two of the most characteristic features of his work.
The exhibition once again brings us face to face with his personal work, influenced by Cubism and Expressionism, but also by Gothic stained glass. His themes, halfway between fable and satire, continue to provide food for thought in which García-Llort depicts everything from his personal experiences to his social reflections with an often-corrosive sense of humour.
His usual bestiary, in which, as always, colourful birds stand out, coexists with works of a more satirical nature such as ‘La lección de corneta’ (The Bugle Lesson) or clearly denouncing works such as ‘El mediterráneo ya huele mal’ (The Mediterranean smells bad already).
