Josep Granyer

Josep Granyer was born in Barcelona in 1899.
 
In 1913 he joins the school of Fine Arts, where Picasso’s father will be his teacher of artistic drawing. At the School of Arts and Crafts he would befriend Alferd Sisquella and Apel·les Fenosa.
 
In 1917 he will be a founder member of Els Evolucionistes group.
 
In the 20s, Josep Granyer begins his exhibiting activity collaborating, in 1924, at the decoration of the ceiling of the St. Jordi Salon at the Generalitat de Catalunya palace.
 
At the begging of the 30s he will promote with other artists the Grup d’Artistes Independents Manifesto. During those years Josep Granyer would combine his shows with the making of sculptures for Public and private institutions
 
His work as sculptor is completed during the decades from the 40s to the 70s with book illustration, among many others Molière’s “The misanthropist”, “The conversation of the dogs” by Cervantes, Walter Scott’s “Ivanhoe” or the magnificient "Museu Zoològic" done in collaboration with Josep Carner.
 
In 1973 Josep Granyer installs at the Rambla de Catalunya in Barcelona two of his most renowned sculptures Girafa-Coqueta and Vedell-Meditació.
In 1980 he joins the group of artists of our gallery, presenting his first solo show at Sala Dalmau in 1981, for it he will do an engraving based on the Jirafa coqueta (Giraffe coquette).
Shortly after his induction at St. Jordi’s Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Josep Granyer dies in Barcelona.
