From 27 October 2023 to 11 February 2024, the MNAC will be presenting the exhibition What Humanity? The Human Figure after the War (1940-1966), an exhibition that brings together some one hundred works by Catalan, Spanish and international artists who, between those years, addressed the question of the human figure in the face of the pain and uncertainty caused by the Second World War and the Spanish Civil War.

The exhibition brings together all kinds of artists, styles, and techniques in its desire to address the dilemmas posed by the Second World War and the Spanish Civil War as broadly as possible. In a post-war period, marked by tragedies such as the Holocaust or the use of the atomic bomb, in a period in which the intellectual framework is that of existentialist philosophy, the curator Álex Mitrani has opted not only for the best known names, such as Picasso, Dalí, Miró, Tàpies, Bacon or Oteiza, but also for lesser-known artists, but also those of great aesthetic and communicative value. Within this group, there are artists who should be highlighted, such as the gallery’s painter Josep Mª Garcia-Llort, Joan Brotat, Claude Collet and Marc Aleu, among many others.

This ambitious exhibition is an unbeatable opportunity both to reflect on humanity and its evolution and to discover artists who have not always been recognised in the artistic context they deserve.
